CODECS – COoperative ITS DEployment Coordination Support

The deployment of cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems and Services (C-ITS), specifically systems for the vehicle- to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication, is at present driven forward in corridor projects and pilots all over Europe. Traffic participants should experience the benefits of the C2X technology seamlessly and coherently. This requires a steady exchange of information between all involved actors from the automotive and supplying industry, infrastructure operators, authorities and associations. Cooperative systems can unfold their whole potential for traffic safety, efficiency and driving comfort only if all these actors align their implementation plans.

CODECS is a so called Coordination & Support Action which is funded by the European Commission in the H2020 Research and Innovation Programme. CODECS aims at supporting the deployment of C-ITS and serves as central hub for all actors which are involved in the realisation of cooperative road traffic. Among these stakeholders, CODECS facilitates a transparent exchange of information and experiences. By means of workshops, webinars and personnel consultation, CODECS investigates challenges which are linked to the implementation and above all the continuous operation of C-ITS in vehicles and traffic infrastructure. Which implementation plans are currently pursued? Which technologies, standards and specifications are used, how is interoperability ensured? Which stakeholders are involved in the process and who is responsible for which part? And which cooperative services are of interest for which stakeholder group, now and in future? Which technologies and methods require further research, testing and standardisation to facilitate cooperative driving? And which decisions are required from public authorities to pave the way for C-ITS on European Roads, and to ease the establishment of cooperative infrastructure especially for cities?

CODECS investigates and consolidates the positions of the different actors and transforms them into guidelines. These guidelines are taken up for discussion by high-level decision making councils such as the European standards setting organisations, the C-ITS Deployment Platform of the European Commission, the Amsterdam Group  and the CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium.
